A Journey Into Homebuilding

Kayla’s path to the homebuilding industry was anything but conventional. While studying at Tarleton State University, she took a job at Integra Premier Services, a medical construction company. Initially tasked with QuickBooks, filing paperwork and running errands, Kayla’s role quickly evolved when she was asked to start purchasing materials and selecting designs for homes. 

“Before I knew it, I was on the job sites everyday, communicating with our sub-contractors,” Kayla said. “I went from working in the office to hands-on experience in no time, and I was hooked. I never saw myself in the construction industry, it was just an opportunity that landed in my lap. Before this, all I ever wanted to do was sell land and ranches since my whole life was agriculture, but as I approached my last semesters at Tarleton State University, homebuilding kept catching my attention again.”

The Rewarding Role of a Purchasing Coordinator

For Kayla, the most fulfilling aspect of her role is knowing that her work contributes to making homeowners’ dreams a reality.

“I don’t communicate directly with the buyers, but I know that here in purchasing, we are building their dream home one Purchase Order at a time,” Kayla says.  

Her daily responsibilities vary widely, ensuring that no two days are ever quite the same. Whether she’s assisting builders with purchase orders, releasing new homes or keeping communities within budget, she’s always working behind the scenes to keep projects on track. Additionally, she plays a crucial role in preparing for upcoming communities, ensuring every detail is accounted for in the system. 

Building Relationships for Long-Term Success

In Kayla’s department, they operate with the mindset that building relationships is the priority, and constructing homes is simply the result. This philosophy extends to interactions with vendors and suppliers, strengthening partnerships that will continue to benefit the company and its homeowners for years to come. One of the biggest challenges Kayla faces is not being in the field herself, so since she and her team don’t have direct visibility into what’s happening on-site, they rely heavily on strong communication with builders and area managers. This collaboration is essential to maintaining efficiency and problem-solving in real time. 

For those considering a career in purchasing or homebuilding, Kayla’s advice is simple: always network. The industry thrives on connections, and building relationships within various trades can open doors to countless opportunities.
