Preparing your home for spring
After a particularly harsh winter, the Spring sunshine is a welcome sight for homeowners across the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. And this is prime time to start preparing your home for spring.
How can you make the most of the first amenable weekends? Riverside Homebuilders put together this to-do list with a few tasks that will help you prepare for the warmer months ahead.
Check all filters and sensors
One of the first steps every homeowner should take when the seasons change is to swap furnace filters. This will keep the HVAC system running smoothly throughout the warmer months and help to eliminate allergens too.
Next, you should take the time to check each of your home’s safety sensors that detect carbon monoxide, radon, and smoke in the air. These are paramount to your family’s safety at home, alerting you first to any potential threats. It might be worth considering WiFi-enabled devices that offer integration with home security systems and can send alerts straight to your phone so you can monitor from anywhere.
This is also a good time to review escape plans in the event of a fire and designate a meeting place outside. The National Fire Protection Association has valuable information on how to make an escape plan for your home.
Plan ahead to save energy
It is tempting to crank down the thermostat as soon as it gets hot outside, but a little planning can go a long way in shrinking your bills this Spring and Summer.
Curtains or window films help to block heat rays from entering your home and maintain a more consistent temperature from room-to-room. Also, try to use fans to circulate air when possible. This will push cooler air down toward you and lower your carbon footprint in the process.
Make the backyard your oasis
Whether you like to fire up the grill and entertain friends every weekend or use your backyard as a play place for the kids, taking a day to prime the space this Spring will set you up for a Summer of fun.
For the entertainers, go ahead and designate a spot for your grill and other essentials that is a safe distance from the house but still convenient for a quick dash outside. At Riverside Homebuilders, we have seen homeowners choose to include an outdoor gas line or outlets when designing their new home. Others also chose to extend the covered patio to create an entertaining space.
If family fun is more your focus right now, sit down with your kids to make a plan for different stations like a playground, a soccer net, and other yard games. Plan for storage too where they can put equipment away at the end of play so it is safe from rain or dog teeth between uses.
