New Year’s resolutions for your home
New Year’s resolutions usually involve the intention to do more. To do activities that help you exercise, get organized, eat better and generally do more to take care of yourself. But what about your home?
Since we spend so much of our time there, your home can be a huge help or hindrance. Riverside Homebuilders put together a list of new year’s resolutions for your home to optimize the space and make it work for you in 2021.
Get comfortable
Last year was a popular one for DIY projects and re-organization, but if you held back it is not too late to start. A well-designed home makes your day smoother by prioritizing what matters most to you.
Start with the places that gather the most clutter like closets and cabinets. Take out the things you do not need like clothing that does not fit or shoes with a few too many miles and set them aside. In the kitchen, do the same for any food that is expired or shuffled to the back of the shelf. Then separate the staples. These need to be easily accessible.
Consider grouping clothing by purpose ranging from camisoles to heavy sweaters with warm-weather clothing off to the side. In the cabinets, think in terms of meal preparation. Keep the kids’ favorite snacks within reach along with common ingredients to make cooking a breeze.
Make this the year for maintenance
A clean home is a healthy home and that applies to everything from your air filters to the countertops you use every day. By staying on top of your regular maintenance tasks you can actually improve your quality of life drastically.
A few of the top priorities should be changing your air filters at least twice during the year and monitoring moisture around your water lines. These will keep you breathing clean air by eliminating allergens like pet dander, mold and mildew. Check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors too. They are often the first line of defense for your family.
For a more comprehensive list of common tasks to help you through the winter, check our recent fall maintenance blog. If you schedule out these tasks now, the seasonal projects will not sneak up on you so fast. Plus, you might get ahead of the line if you need to submit a warranty request.
Think about long term
If you are considering a move in the next year -- whether it is your first home or fifth -- start planning now. Mortgage interest rates are still near historic lows which makes this a great time to build or buy your dream home.
Think about the location first for a convenient commute to work and school. Then, start to evaluate what you want and need from a new home. Do you need more bedrooms or bathrooms? Do you need a dedicated office? Once you have a better idea of these answers, you can start picturing a floor plan that fits your needs.
