Pastor Craig: Meeting Challenges with a Smile
Occasionally, when you talk to someone, you can hear them smiling through the phone. It echoes in their voice and the energy radiates from the speaker no matter how far away they are from you in the moment.
Pastor Craig Davis Sr. is one of those people.
Even after a tumultuous year like 2020 that presented his own private health battles in the midst of a worldwide pandemic, Craig is still smiling. He is laughing too, seemingly grateful for the challenge.
“I told a parishioner that when storms come, they come to identify strength,” Craig said. “When you put a new roof on your home, how do you know it’s a good roof until the next storm comes?”
And storms certainly did come.
Craig and his wife Gwenet came to Riverside Homebuilders in August looking to buy a new home. The couple was already living in Sherman’s Quail Run community and eyeing developments in the new phase. They fell in love with a beautiful Briscoe floor plan on a corner lot and excitedly started the homebuying process.
Then, Craig was diagnosed with cancer.
He had to take a step back from his full-time position as a pastor in the community and focus on treatments all while watching over his new home being built down the road. But as you probably guessed by now, he took it in stride.
“There was never one time that I was stressed or worried about the process with Riverside,” Craig said. “If I had a chance to do it all over again I wouldn’t hesitate.”
Even when a funny miscommunication about the location of the gate on his fence led to the convenient solution of one on each side or when he needed a refresher on how to turn off the home’s water supply before Texas’ historic storms this winter.
Then, there is his favorite feature that he calls “The Batcave Entrance.” It is a private entrance leading from the garage, through the laundry room, and into the master suite where he can glide through unnoticed. Or the office, where Gwenet has been able to work from home.
It also helps that the new home keeps Craig close to his mother-in-law, assistant pastor and other friends they’ve made throughout the neighborhood. His grandchildren visit too. The open floor plan was key for their love of entertaining.
With Craig on the road to recovery and planning a return to his full-time pastor position in June, he is smiling.
“We’ve been here four or five months now, but it feels like I’ve been here a lifetime,” Craig said. “Everyone who played a part in this made it feel like a home. If you saw me, you’d think I won the lottery, even now!”
