The History of Eagle Mountain, A North Texas Favorite
The great frontier
Early explorers “discovered” the southern regions of Texas, but settlers didn’t head north until the middle of the 1800s. Like the Native Americans who lived on this land, the newcomers were attracted by the ample supplies of water and game.
Ranches and farms began to take over the landscape. By the end of the century, livestock grazed in fields where buffalo had freely roamed.
The Eagle Mountain area presented the right combination of workable terrain. The water supply came from the Trinity River, which ran 710 miles from the northern part of Texas to just below the Red River, east of Houston. The Trinity River branches off into four forks: the East Fork West Fork, Clear Fork, and Elm Fork. The West Fork runs along the foot of Eagle Mountain.
The birth of a lake
In 1928, the Texas State Board of Water Engineers issued a permit to build a dam on the West Fork of the Trinity River to form a new lake. Construction began two years later. When the 85-foot-high dam was finished in 1932, it spanned 4,800 feet across the West Fork. In 1934, Eagle Mountain Reservoir was formed.
Now known as Eagle Mountain Lake (not “Reservoir”), the man-made body of water spans 8,694 acres and has become a popular venue for every type of water sport enthusiast: fishing, swimming, boating, paddling, waterskiing, and wakeboarding.
Rising over the lake, Eagle Mountain Park is just 15 miles north of Fort Worth, and offers 400 acres of conservation area to explore. Hikers, campers, and nature lovers come here to escape to unspoiled landscapes.
